Researchers say we are less able to suppress a negative experience after sleeping than we were before. Sleep increases emotions, thoughts, and problems. When we sleep, our brain processes new information and stores it in our short and long-term memories. During sleep, anger penetrates our long-term memory and can have a lasting effect.
A bad experience is greatly reduced if we stay awake afterward while sleep “shields” the negative emotional response. If bad feelings become entrenched in your memory, it will be much more difficult to suppress them in the future.
