Do Members of the British Royal Family have to Pay for their Food?

The most important members of the royal family do not pay for their meals in cash but earn their living by regularly representing the monarchy. These include King Charles and Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Catherine of Wales, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and his family (i.e. Sarah when she is with Andrew), and Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

The senior royals can do their grocery shopping, but they would have a credit card that would pay for the items. This includes any take-out food that’s delivered and meals out, though the royals prefer to order take-out since going to a restaurant can be a hassle. So the senior royals receive allowances, though the King and Prince of Wales receive their money differently, and they don’t pay for food the way we do.

When it comes to the royals who don’t work for the monarchy, they do pay for their living expenses. They do have trusts and their parents and the late Queen likely set up trust funds for them, and by them, I mean all the grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth. From Peter Phillips (Princess Anne’s son) to Princess Eugenie, these royals receive money but it’s up to them to live within their financial limits. They don’t possess hundreds of millions of dollars.

As a royal moves further away relationally to the monarch, they must earn their own money and pay for their living expenses if they don’t have money via a fund set up for them.

While I don’t have a list of which royals have to pay for their food and living expenses, it stands to reason that some royals like Princess Beatrice work to earn money for themselves, even if they have trust funds. Beatrice and others like her pay for a few of their expenses, and their children will pay for even more. Then their children will pay for even more. Trust funds are nice, but at some point there simply isn’t enough in them to pay for all one’s living expenses.

For the top royals, they have their security pick up the tab, and they are reimbursed or have a credit card issued to them. This is done for security reasons, but this applies to very few only.
