Do members of the British Royal Family have to live at Buckingham Palace? Are there restrictions on where they can live?

Normally, the monarch stays at Buckingham Palace for work and perhaps also for living during the week, but the palace is situated in the middle of so much activity that it doesn’t feel like home and comfortable. It is true that Buckingham Palace is beautiful and has magnificent gardens, but Queen Elizabeth did not feel particularly at home there. It was not her favorite place, Balmoral in Scotland, so Her Majesty spent the last years of her life at Windsor Castle. Windsor meant a great deal to Queen Elizabeth II.

King Charles and Queen Camilla must feel the same way, because they prefer Clarence House to the Palace, though they do have their staff and offices in Buckingham Palace which is right around the corner. Clarence House is smaller and feels homey and comfortable, and the royals love the place.

The Queen Mother, Elizabeth, lived at Clarence House from 1952 until she died in 2002. Even Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip lived there, too, when they were first married. Now Charles and Camilla use Clarence House for business, with their Household staff (their most important aides) working from there now, along with being the place where foreign dignitaries can be received and entertained.

Buckingham Palace has been the official residence of the Sovereign since 1837. Today it serves as the administrative headquarters of King Charles. The place is huge, having more than 775 rooms. Buck Palace is still used for garden parties, other official events, and receptions, but it is an enormous palace, so it makes sense that the King and Queen want to live where they have since they were married.

Buckingham Palace will likely continue to be where the monarch lives in an official capacity, even if they live in other palaces and homes most of the time. Buckingham Palace is impressive and beautiful, and it will still be associated with the reigning Sovereign long into the future.
