Why did Diana come a queen when she married Prince Charles and Kate didn't when she married Prince William?

Diana married the Prince of Wales, so she did not have to wait for her husband to take office. Diana became Princess of Wales the day she married Charles, the Prince of Wales (although he is a prince by birth, we’ll talk about that later). They could have been called Duke and Duchess of Cornwall because that’s what they were, but in this case, the superior title took precedence.

Diana was not born a princess. Nor was Catherine born a princess. Until now they have been on equal footing.

But Catherine Middleton married the alternate in line to the throne, Prince William. Queen Elizabeth also offered Catherine and Prince William the Duchy of Cambridge. The Queen retained the Duchy of Cambridge for William and the couple assumed the common title William and Catherine, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

William remained Prince William. Catherine was the Duchess of Cambridge, although she could have chosen to be Princess William, but why not accept the gift of being a Duchess by marrying a Duke? And that is exactly what Catherine did. Queen Elizabeth was delighted.

When Queen Elizabeth died, Prince Charles automatically became king. This opened the door for the ascension of William, who was made Prince of Wales by the King. The King even made sure that William and Catherine used their new titles, Prince and Princess of Wales. Catherine is a princess because she is married to the Prince of Wales. Note that Catherine is not called Princess Catherine, because that would mean she is a princess by birth, like Princess Beatrice, Princess Anne, or Princess Charlotte.

Someday Catherine, Princess of Wales, will be called Queen (Consort) Catherine if William becomes the next king.

If a woman is not born a princess, she will never become one of her own free will. A woman can marry the Prince of Wales and be called Princess of Wales. Prince George will one day be Prince of Wales and his wife Princess of Wales.
