Queen Elizabeth II’s health had been deteriorating for several years as she was believed to be suffering from a form of cancer. Instead of staying in Windsor, Elizabeth opted for her usual routine and spent the summer in Scotland at Balmoral. Her Majesty traveled there as usual and stayed with her family, who visited her as usual.

No one could have foreseen the events of the morning of September 8. Queen Elizabeth was losing more and more weight, but she did not know how long she had to live. The situation was deteriorating in the place she loved most. I always liked the fact that Scotland was the place where the late Queen died. The Scots could say goodbye in Edinburgh if they wished, and the Queen spent her last days where she was happiest.

Queen Elizabeth did not live at Buckingham Palace at the time. She had moved to Windsor to contain the pandemic and Prince Philip spent the last months of his life at Windsor Castle. At Windsor Castle, they had moments of peace that they never had elsewhere, and after the death of her husband, who lived to be over 70, Elizabeth decided to stay at Windsor. Here she had more family around her, it wasn’t London and she had room to breathe.
On the day of her death, Queen Elizabeth was living at Balmoral with her daughter Princess Anne, while the then Prince Charles was staying at nearby Birkhall. Would it have been the same if she had been in Windsor? Perhaps it would have been. But Elizabeth had her daughter and son with her that morning, a beautiful late summer’s day in Scotland.
