“Acts of kindness and compassion toward others, especially the most forgotten and marginalized in society, are never forgotten. In 2020, during the pandemic, the Princess of Wales visited a closed category jail for women and met a female inmate, Francesca Fattore, who was serving part of a 3-year sentence for drug offenses.
The Mirror reports that four years on, Francesca has transformed her life and now supports scores of other female inmates through her YouTube channel, UK Ex Female Prisoner. When she learned of the Princess’s cancer diagnosis, Fran was deeply touched and gave an interview to the Mirror to share her touching experience and message of support for Catherine.
Francesca credited the Princess for helping her get back on track and now campaigns for female inmates. Behind bars, she received the support of Catherine, who took the time to listen to her story and even shared a sofa with her during a visit to HMP Surrey.
Francesca recounted, “I was extremely nervous, but she immediately made me feel relaxed. She was just so genuine and sincere. Nothing was false about her. I could tell she genuinely wanted to hear my story and cared about what I had to say. Having the privilege to sit with her inspired me to keep going and made me realize I was on the right path. She made me feel worthy, and the experience left me on cloud nine. The video was also posted on the Kensington Royal social media accounts, and I was the talk of the prison for weeks, which was a nice feeling.”

Francesca continued, “It is devastating, shocking, and we feel completely helpless. I was very touched by Kate’s diagnosis, especially by what my mother is going through. I was gutted for her because she is such a genuine, lovely, and caring person – it could happen to anyone, so why her? Mum couldn’t believe it either. He was very sad for her and said he understood how she felt. I’m sending you so much love – please keep fighting. And always remember: You haven’t got to live with cancer, cancer has to live with you – and you won’t let it beat you.”
Catherine is so loved and admired in a way that always moves me. Here is someone who faces misogyny daily, mental abuse from the press, death threats, slander, and bullying year after year. But all she projects and gives back is love, warmth, kindness, and quiet strength and grace in the face of adversity.
Lord, bring back our Princess healed and complete. No acts of kindness are lost; no acts of compassion are forgotten. May she heal fully and peacefully.”
