The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have adopted a strategic and thoughtful approach to the public appearances of their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
While the two eldest royal children have been increasingly involved in major events, the youngest, Prince Louis, has been kept out of the spotlight on certain occasions. This decision is attributed to the careful planning of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
According to royal expert Lizzie Robinson, the Cambridge parents have meticulously managed how and when they introduce their children to official royal duties and high-profile public engagements. “They [the Prince and Princess of Wales] are cautious about how and where they take them,” Robinson told True Royalty TV’s The Royal.
This was evident this month when Prince George accompanied his father, Prince William, to the European Football Championship final on July 14. Princess Charlotte attended the Wimbledon men’s final on the same day with her mother, the Princess of Wales. Her younger brother, Prince Louis, was conspicuous by his absence.

The royal expert suggests that the decision to include or exclude the Cambridge children from specific occasions is based on the parents’ assessment of what is appropriate for each child at a given time. “They looked at each event on a case-by-case basis,” said Robinson. “And the fact that Louis wasn’t abducted shows that they are weighing up what they think is right for each child at each moment. So his moment will come.”
This strategic approach to children’s public participation is not new. During the Trooping the Color celebrations in June 2024, the three Cambridge children, accompanied by the Princess of Wales, appeared on the glass State float on the Mall. But it was young Prince Louis who stole the show with his antics. He danced to the music, yawned, and played with the relaxer, much to the delight of the royal fans.
The Color Walk ceremony was especially important for the Princess of Wales, as it was her first official royal engagement since announcing her cancer diagnosis earlier this year. In a statement before the event, the Duchess spoke about her state of health. She admitted that there had been “good days and bad days” during chemotherapy, but assured the public that she was making “good progress”.
The careful management of the Cambridge children’s public appearances reflects the parents’ desire to protect their children’s well-being and ensure that each child’s introduction to the public eye is undertaken at the appropriate time and in a manner that is sensitive to their individual needs and development. While George and Charlotte have been included in high-profile events, the decision to keep the younger Louis away from certain engagements suggests a thoughtful and considered approach to navigating the unique challenges of royal childhood in the public eye.
