Prince William has opened up about the lasting impact his late mother, Princess Diana, had on his life, particularly her compassion and work around homelessness. In the first episode of his new ITV docuseries, Prince William: “We Can End Homelessness, the Prince of Wales reveals how childhood experiences shaped his dedication to combating homelessness.”
A Mission Inspired by Princess Diana
Princess Diana’s influence is central to Prince William’s advocacy. She was known for her hands-on approach to humanitarian causes, often bringing William and his brother, Prince Harry, along to witness her work firsthand. Reflecting on those formative experiences, William shared how visiting shelters like The Passage made an indelible mark on him.
“I must have been 10 or 11 when my mother took us,” he says. “It was a new and intimidating experience for me, but she had a way of making everyone feel at ease. I remember being surprised by how joyful the atmosphere was, even though these people faced tremendous hardships.” This early exposure helped William understand many realities and inspired his current initiatives.
The Launch of Homewards: A Five-Year Plan
In June 2023, Prince William introduced his Homewards initiative, a bold five-year strategy aimed at reducing homelessness in the U.K. The goal? To make homelessness “rare, brief, and nonrecurring.” This ambitious plan is showcased in the docuseries, where viewers follow William’s journey through the program’s first year.
“The U.K. is experiencing the most severe homelessness crisis in living memory,” William explained. “Over 350,000 people are without a permanent home, and it’s crucial to change the narrative and bring solutions.”
William is using his royal platform to bring attention to this urgent issue. “I believe it’s essential to act rather than just talk. My position allows me to drive meaningful change,” he said.

William’s mother instilled in him the importance of understanding life beyond palace walls. Diana made sure her sons recognized the disparities others face, a legacy William now passes on to his children with Kate Middleton: Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
“Just as my mother spoke to me about homelessness, I discuss it with my kids,” William shared. “When they see someone living on the streets, they ask why. These are important conversations because they shape how the next generation views societal challenges.”
A Personal Connection and Ongoing Commitment
Despite living a life of privilege, Prince William recognizes his duty to understand and address homelessness. “I have never known what it’s like to be homeless,” he admitted. “But when I meet people who have lived on the street, I see the pain and the burden they carry. It’s a humbling experience, and I feel a responsibility to help.”
This commitment isn’t new. In 2005, William became a patron of Centrepoint, a charity his mother once supported. He also serves as a patron for The Passage, continuing Diana’s legacy of empathy and direct involvement.

The Homewards project emphasizes collaboration and empowerment. “Our ethos is about giving local communities the tools and resources they need to make a lasting impact,” William explained. The initiative has launched in six initial locations, where partnerships and networks are being established to implement innovative solutions.
“In the first year, we want to see tangible outcomes,” he said.“The ultimate goal is to demonstrate that it is possible to prevent and significantly reduce homelessness.”

Stories from the Frontlines
The docuseries also highlights the voices of those directly involved, like Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, who overcame homelessness to become the chief fire officer of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. “You don’t have to experience homelessness to relate to the trauma or loss that comes with it,” she said, adding that Prince William’s genuine connection to people makes a difference.
Community activist Safiya Saeed echoed this sentiment. “People criticize him for living in castles, but it doesn’t matter where he lives. What matters is that he’s leading an initiative to make change,” she said. It’s about time someone of his caliber took a stand.
Looking Toward the Future
Prince William’s determination is unwavering, even though he knows the challenge is immense. “This is a massive undertaking,” he acknowledged. “But I’m committed to seeing real progress.”
He sees his work on homelessness as an integral part of his royal duties. “Why else would I be here if not to help people and influence change?” he asked. “It’s about more than addressing a crisis. It’s about giving people hope and showing that a better future is possible.”
Prince William’s efforts exemplify his mother’s compassionate spirit while carving out his path as a changemaker. With Homewards, he’s hoping to inspire action and, ultimately, a society where homelessness is a thing of the past.
