This Year will be about “keeping up with Wales” because why were we told his first engagement was due tomorrow and today he just had a surprise engagement? Just like Catherine did yesterday, Prince William made his first appearance of the year and it was timed to the announcement of a new patronage: He is now patron of the College of Paramedics.
The new patronage is so fitting since William was the first Heir in British History to ever hold a regular civilian job and William worked as an air ambulance pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance from 2015 to 2017, before becoming a full-time Royal.
Greatest Hits radio revealed that the Paramedics had no idea Prince William was coming to Birmingham today and were surprised to see him quietly enter the inaugural Emergency and Critical Care conference.
During his speech, Prince William joked: ” It’s great to be back in Birmingham and for any fellow Villa fans with us today. I look forward to celebrating our win over Everton later,’ he joked (which he did when he stopped at a Wetherspoons Pub for a pint with a group of Aston Villa fans).

Then more seriously, Prince William praised the emergency care professionals saying: “Paramedics and those in the emergency services are adaptable, multiskilled and crucially, know how to work under pressure.”
“I got to know these pressures very well when I was a pilot with RAF Search and Rescue and East Anglian Air Ambulance. My time in these roles has given me a better understanding of the daily challenges you all face and has given me a lifelong motivation to do all I can to support your community.”
“It’s not just a job. Every day is characterized by unpredictable challenges. Every shout is a journey into the unknown. Every split second of a decision has an immeasurable impact on so many people.”
Very well detailed by someone who himself had to work under pressure of time, weather, and life-threatening situations to save lives.
Indeed, Prince William has proven that he can work very well under pressure and that no matter how unpredictable the challenges are, he tackles them head-on and without histrionics; all very necessary attributes of a sound leader.
Following her meeting with the prince of Wales, paramedic student, Rebecca, who’s in her first year of University simply said: “You can tell he cares.”
A thought that was matched by Andrea James a regulatory health lawyer advising doctors, paramedics, and pharmacists. She quoted the College of Paramedics announcing Prince William as their new patron and replied: “Fantastic news. I can say from personal experience that HRH is an entirely genuine, incredible supporter of the paramedic profession (99% behind the scenes & unacknowledged). Wonderful to see him granting this public support & patronage to the College.”
When you genuinely care, people can see it and they will be the ones to recognize your work in public for you.
