My Nan likes to say, “Only love can unlock a will and strength within ourselves that we might never have known existed.” A will to fight. A will to withstand. A will to win.
This is the story of how Catherine fell in love with Prince William —a love so profound that it transformed her life in ways she could never have imagined.

During a royal visit 2023, Catherine answered candidly to a student that she “never expected to become a royal, but she fell in love with William.”
A younger Catherine had much simpler aspirations. A close friend from Marlborough revealed to the Mail on Sunday, a decade ago:
“All Catherine ever wanted was a husband, a house in the country, loads of children, a dog, and a kitchen with an Aga.”
Indeed, this Berkshire country girl did not dream of royalty or stardom. All she desired was a happy marriage—a loving husband, a home full of children whom she would raise, and a loyal dog in the serene English countryside.
She also aspired to be a teacher, something she revealed during a heartfelt visit in 2012 to her old prep school, St Andrews in Berkshire.
So falling in love with William at St Andrew’s was a monumental leap of faith into the unknown.
The Challenges of Loving a Prince
During his 21st birthday interview, Prince William, who was already secretly dating Catherine, shared:
“If I like a girl, I really like her and she likes me too, which is rare, then I ask her out. But at the same time, I don’t want to put her in an awkward situation because people don’t understand what it means to know me.”
Indeed, loving William came with immense challenges. For years, Catherine endured relentless daily paparazzi harassment, her phone hacked 155 times, no privacy or security provided for her family, and national scrutiny that extended to bullying her loved ones.
Yet, for the past 24 years, Catherine has faced every obstacle with grace and unwavering positivity—all because she is loved just as devotedly by William.
For every sacrifice she made to stand by him, William broke royal protocols and defied both the press and palace courtiers to give her what she desired most.
As his wife, she may not have been able to pursue her dream of teaching—but he gave her everything else her heart longed for:
- A present and attentive husband committed to a stable marriage.
- Three beautiful children they are both deeply devoted to raising together.
- Their very own 10-bedroom estate in the countryside of Norfolk, Anmer Hall, where Catherine undoubtedly has the kitchen of her dreams.
- And finally, he didn’t forget the dog she always wanted; during a visit to The Duchy College in Callington, Prince William revealed that their cocker spaniel, Orla, sleeps on the bed with them.
- A Marriage Rooted in Protection and Devotion.
As a close friend remarked in an article celebrating William’s 40th birthday in 2022:
“William knows that without the man she fell in love with-Catherine would have had a good life in the country and would have started a family away from the spotlight. Unfortunately, there is a certain snobbery when marrying a foreigner. Things are much better now than then, but William is still very protective of his wife.”
Indeed, Prince William is fiercely protective of his marriage and family—a value instilled in him by his mother, Princess Diana. In the iconic Panorama interview, Diana recounted how, in 1992, she went to Eton to explain her separation to a 10-year-old William :
“William is a child who thinks deeply. That’s why I’ve always told him: ‘If in life you meet someone you love, you should hug them and take care of them; and if you’re lucky enough to meet someone who loves you, you should protect them’.”

This conversation resonated deeply with him. A friend later shared:
“When you talk to William, he’s quite puritanical when he talks about his parents’ marriage and what went wrong. That had a big impact on how he coped with his relationship with Catherine and why it took him so long to settle down.” That had a big impact on how he dealt with his relationship with Catherine and why it took him so long to settle down. He wanted her to be the right person and for it to last forever.”
Forever and a Day
William chose wisely, and theirs is a marriage destined to endure through lifetimes. Together, they embody the essence of love —a bond unshaken by adversity, fortified by mutual respect, and nurtured by devotion.
Their journey reminds us all: Sometimes, love asks us to step into the unknown—but when it’s real, it’s worth every leap of faith.
And so, the words of my Nan ring true once more: “Only love can unlock a will and strength within ourselves that we might never have known existed.”
Catherine and William’s story proves that love truly conquers all.
