In April 2019, Prince Harry and Princess Catherine made a rare joint appearance at Westminster Abbey to attend the annual Anzac Day memorial service, honoring Australian and New Zealand service members who have served and sacrificed in conflicts.
With Princess Catherine set to attend this year’s service alongside Princess Anne, the 2019 engagement remains a notable moment in royal history — marking one of the last major public appearances she and Prince Harry carried out together before significant changes within the Royal Family.
Prince Harry and Princess Catherine Arrive Together at Westminster Abbey
The Duke of Sussex and the Princess of Wales arrived together at Westminster Abbey, presenting a united and respectful presence for the solemn occasion.
Princess Catherine wore an elegant blue fit-and-flare coat by Catherine Walker, paired with a red poppy pinned to her lapel — a traditional symbol of remembrance. Prince Harry opted for a dark navy suit, also wearing a poppy in tribute to fallen service members.
Their composed and confident arrival reflected the importance of the commemorative event.

While Catherine attended the London service, Prince William was in New Zealand on a two-day official visit, where he participated in an Anzac Day wreath-laying ceremony in Auckland.

During the service, Prince Harry wore the Star of the Grand Cross Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, an honor bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II in 2015 in recognition of his service to the Sovereign.
At the time, the appearance was seen as a positive public engagement. Years later, in his 2023 memoir Spare, Prince Harry reflected on personal family dynamics during that period.

A Notable Moment of Royal Protocol
Photographers captured a courteous gesture as Prince Harry allowed Princess Catherine to step ahead of him before entering their vehicle — a subtle but meaningful example of royal protocol and mutual respect.
Throughout the service, the pair maintained a dignified and unified presence as they commemorated Anzac Day.
Harry’s Attendance Confirmed on the Morning of the Service
Although Prince Harry had reportedly intended to attend the service, his name was initially left off the official program in case he needed to remain available for the imminent birth of his first child.
His attendance was confirmed on the morning of the event. Just 11 days later, on May 6, 2019, Prince Archie was born.
At the time of the memorial, Meghan Markle was on maternity leave and weeks away from giving birth.
A Moment Before Major Royal Changes
The 2019 Anzac Day service would become one of the final high-profile joint appearances between Prince Harry and Princess Catherine before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back as senior working royals in 2020.
Today, Princess Catherine is expected to attend the Anzac Day service alongside Princess Anne, continuing the Royal Family’s longstanding tradition of honoring Australian and New Zealand service personnel.
