Prince Harry Speaks Out After Losing Lawsuit Against U.K. Tabloid: “A Complete and Obvious Whitewash”

A Swift Response Following the Ruling

Prince Harry wasted no time voicing his frustration after a British judge dismissed the lawsuit he had brought against Associated Newspapers Limited. The ruling landed on the very day Harry was in London for events tied to the Invictus Games.

Just hours after Mr. Justice Nicklin delivered his verdict, following a trial that stretched across 46 days, Harry and fellow claimant Baroness Doreen Lawrence released a joint statement on Tuesday, July 7. The message was blunt and unmistakably critical of the outcome.

“We Came Seeking Justice. We Received Neither.”

In their joint statement, Harry and Baroness Lawrence expressed deep disappointment with the decision, arguing that the court had overlooked earlier findings from similar cases against other publishers, where investigators were shown to have engaged in unlawful information-gathering involving comparable stories and well-known individuals.

They described the ruling as a “whitewash,” and said the court had gone out of its way to clear the publisher — something they called “shocking” and “unwarranted.”

Among the examples cited in their statement: a private investigator who admitted on tape to unlawfully obtaining information about Baroness Lawrence, and a journalist who kept records of investigators used to access highly sensitive medical details — information so sensitive, they noted, that even the publisher itself hesitated to print it.

Another example referenced an email in which a private investigator allegedly passed a journalist flight details for a young woman traveling to visit her boyfriend — an apparent reference to Chelsy Davy, Harry’s former girlfriend, with whom he had an on-and-off relationship between 2004 and 2010.

“One Rule for the Papers, Another for the Claimants”

Harry and Lawrence argued that the court applied a double standard: while the claimants presented documented evidence, the publisher’s journalists largely offered denials — and the court, in their view, accepted those denials even where inconsistencies were apparent to observers in the courtroom.

The statement closed with thanks to their legal team and to the witnesses who came forward during the proceedings.

Harry and Six Other Claimants Fell Short of Proving Their Case

Harry was not alone in this legal battle. Six other high-profile figures joined him as claimants, including Elizabeth Hurley, Elton John and his husband David Furnish, Sir Simon Hughes, and Sadie Frost. The group had accused the publisher of unlawfully gathering private information through methods such as phone hacking, deception, and payments to private investigators.

In his ruling, Mr. Justice Nicklin made clear that suspicion alone was not sufficient to establish liability, concluding that the claimants had not proven the disputed articles were the product of unlawful information-gathering.

Harry Took the Stage With a Smile Despite the Setback

Shortly after the ruling was announced, Harry appeared at Chatham House for an Invictus Games-related event, showing no visible sign of frustration. He opened his remarks with a light joke about the venue, noting it was one of the few rooms in the U.K. with air conditioning — quipping that this likely explained the full turnout.

His lawyer, David Sherbourne, was seen arriving at Chatham House while Harry was inside, shortly after the court’s decision became public. Harry later left the venue with a smile and a thumbs-up before quickly getting into a waiting car.

Part of a Long-Running Battle With the British Press

The ruling marks a significant setback in Harry’s ongoing campaign against the British tabloid press. He previously secured a legal win against Mirror Group Newspapers and reached a settlement with News Group Newspapers earlier this year.
