According to insiders, there is a belief that Meghan Markle had been seeking an exit from the Royal Family right from the start. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex caused a crisis within the royal circle when they unexpectedly announced their intention to step down from their roles in January 2020. While the couple initially cited “many months of reflection and internal discussions” as the reason for their decision, it is now claimed that Meghan had desired an exit from the very beginning.
Veteran royal correspondent Valentine Low, who has extensively covered the royal family for over a decade, revealed that there is skepticism among some within the Palace regarding Meghan’s level of commitment to her role. Low mentioned that Meghan had received a thorough briefing and seemed content to discuss her vision for the future on air. However, insiders believe that behind the scenes, she portrayed herself as a victim, expressing sentiments like “You don’t want me, you think I’m going to fail, I’m not welcome really”. This led some to believe that he was actively looking for an exit strategy the whole time.
The Sussexes have consistently maintained that they did not intend to completely sever ties with the Royal Family and had hoped to establish a hybrid role that would allow them to fulfill public engagements while having some freedom from certain responsibilities. They accuse the Palace of compelling them to step back entirely from their roles as working royals. In a legal case last year, Prince Harry expressed that he and Meghan felt “forced” to leave the royal fold, causing them both great sadness. Harry emphasized that the UK is their home and an integral part of their children’s heritage, expressing a desire for them to feel at home there, alongside their residence in the United States.
