James Middleton Thriving in the Shadow of Royalty

Inside Catherine and William's Heartwarming Day with Liz Hatton

James Middleton embarks on the promotion trail for “Meet Ella,” navigating the complexities of existing in the shadow of a highly prominent sibling. Conversations with him frequently circle back to Catherine, as interviewers seem to care only about her life and her family with William.

When posed with inquiries about his sister, James masterfully deflected, stating, “It is not my place to speak on that,” while reaffirming that the family stands firmly by her side on her path to recovery.

This is the hidden struggle of being the sibling of a highly accomplished and famous individual: you often feel like an unnoticed extension of their persona. The spotlight never lingers on you, and the constant comparison often leaves you feeling inadequate. There’s no doubt James has wrestled with these emotions of envy and resentment—denying this would be untruthful.

In a captivating interview snippet from the early 1990s, Diana insightfully remarked about her two young sons:
“While the firstborn may bask in the glory, the second enjoys a greater sense of liberty. Harry, in time, will come to see the fortune in not having been born the eldest.”
“My second will never bear the same weight that poor William must carry for a lifetime.”

This, indeed, is the essential truth that James came to understand but one that eluded Harry. James cultivated genuine affection and concern for his sister, recognizing that life as “Catherine, Princess of Wales” is far more burdensome than living as “James Middleton,” her sibling.

If we strip away the Royal titles, we can observe that James and Harry initially faced a parallel dilemma: both were born in the shadow of exceptionally admired, charismatic, and accomplished older siblings—the pride of their families—while they struggled academically and battled emotional and mental challenges, all while standing in those siblings’ shadows.

Yet, this is where their paths diverged. James owned his missteps and refrained from placing blame on his sister or family. He embraced his imperfections and sought to live a fulfilled life, all while steadfastly supporting his sisters and the rest of the family.

Conversely, Harry chose to blame his family for his struggles, allowing his jealousy and frustration with his elder brother to fester, even going so far as to label William his “archnemesis” and launch a futile attempt to tear him down.

Had Harry internalized his mother’s wisdom, he might have realized, as James did, that it is far less daunting to be “Prince Harry” than to bear the responsibilities of “Prince William.”

Not everyone possesses the resilience needed to weather the harsh realities of Royal life. James openly admitted the relentless scrutiny inflicted immense anxiety upon him, and for that reason, he never envied Catherine’s position under the unyielding gaze of the public eye.

In contrast, Harry confessed that he was not cut out for Royal life and its pressures. He simply lacks the emotional fortitude to endure it. Yet, he resents that William has the strength for it—just as Catherine does—and laments that Meghan, too, could never thrive in such a demanding role.

The essence of it all is that James discovered tranquility where Harry did not, for Harry could not come to terms with the fact that William and Catherine have what it takes to thrive in their roles as future King and Queen, succeeding under even greater scrutiny than Harry ever encountered before retreating from the public eye altogether.
