In the historic castle, Carlos took part in the key presentation, a tradition dating back to 1851, during the reign of Queen Victoria. Interestingly, his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth, received the keys in 2015 during a similar ceremony at the same location. Although Charles is undergoing treatment for cancer, he has a busy schedule. His determination is inspiring. On June 14, he will once again participate as head of the family in the annual Trooping the Colour parade, where he will ride in a carriage for the second time in a row instead of on horseback, as Buckingham Palace has confirmed. At the end of May, the king and Camilla made a two-day trip to Canada, where he opened the Canadian parliament. His advisors described how he is coping with the disease: “What you learn from this disease is that you can only learn to live with it, and that is exactly what he is doing.”
“Medical science has made incredible advances,” an aide added, emphasizing that Charles shows no visible difference in his demeanor or energy levels. “As long as you just do what the doctors say, just live your life as normal as possible. That’s exactly what he is doing.”

Celebrating the Duchy of Lancaster
Monday’s visit took place as part of celebrations honoring the county that gave its name to the Duchy of Lancaster. Since 1399, the duchy, which covers more than 41,000 acres of land in Cheshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, South Yorkshire, and other regions, has been privately owned by the reigning monarch. (It is comparable to the Duchy of Cornwall, which supports Prince William’s work and lifestyle as heir to the throne).
Inside the castle, Charles met with local businesses showcasing regional specialties such as artisanal cheeses, wool from specific breeds that sustain the British wool industry, and handmade furniture. Each interaction highlighted his passion for preserving traditional industries and promoting innovation.
Later, the king attended a reception with volunteers and staff from across the county, including representatives from Escape 2 Make, an organization that offers creative workshops to help young people facing life’s difficulties. He also spoke with members of St. John’s Hospice, the Lancaster Literature Festival, and a local World War II veteran.
