Calling Lady Louise’s romance a “Will and Kate 2” because she is at St. Andrews too is not quite accurate now is it?
We have known of this romance for a bit now and it has not picked up steam in the media or interest in the public sphere. It is quite simply because the situations are Wildly different: Lady Louise, by being 16th in the line of succession and living a remote life from the spotlight, can live her romance privately and freely as her choices do not directly affect the Throne nor the monarchy.
This is a far cry from the second in line to the Throne at the time and Heir living a romance as whoever he picks will become the future Queen. So the levels are vastly different and so is the public interest.
I do understand though that the press feels nostalgic for that era: it was the early 2000s, a boom of youthful romance in the monarchy between the handsome heir and the gorgeous commoner; the Press was making money selling every salacious piece of rumors and attacks they could write on the young royal couple. After all, the Royal correspondent and the Royal rota were “semi-gods of information” at that time…
But there will never be a William and Catherine 2.0; which I am thankful for when it comes to Lady Louise because no young university sweetheart deserves to endure the type of mediatic abuse and harassment that William and Catherine went through, barely in their 20s, just because he was the Heir.
Now, I am happy my generation got to experience their beautiful romance in real-time to their iconic royal wedding because we can appreciate in real time how sturdy, inspiring, and sincere their 2 decades of love story is, especially given this hardship year for Catherine.
But in all truth, the next ones who will come close to experiencing the W&C mediatic fevers are their children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, especially Prince George, the next Heir. I hope for their sake they will have the deft and private savvy approach of their parents and not willingly court the spotlight. In an era where AI and social media misinformation reigns, it will be a new wild horse to tame.
Hopefully, by then, most of the Royal reporters who made their parents’ life hell will have retired if not gone into a different field from the boredom of having William and Catherine give them nothing to work with for the next decade. Oh well, one can hope.
