It seems like yesterday since among those who waited for news of his delivery was a solitary Republican with a loudhailer, desperately trying to persuade people of the error of their ways. ‘If you keep coming here,’ he told the crowd, ‘then she is going to keep having them!’ And the response? A loud cheer!
Clearly, to the majority, more is better; and so – on the great Feast of St George, the Patron Saint of England – &, no less – Shakespeare’s birthday, a Prince was born.
Such exquisite timing. At birth, the 3rd child of his parents, the 4th-living generation of the House of Windsor, the 5th in line to the British throne, & the 6th grandchild of the Queen. One wonders – will he remember Great GanGan?
All HRH needed were 3 or 4 names. The neatest & most appropriate – George & William – had already been taken – by his bro & Pa

Would the Bard inspire a name? Ajax or Alexander? Benedict or Bertram? Hector or Hubert? Oliver or Orlando? Prospero or Petruchio? His parents took their time in naming their boy. One can only imagine that – having produced a 3rd child, a 2nd spare to their requisite heir, the Cambridges (as they were) could choose a name simply because they liked it – & so Louis Arthur Charles.

In the past, second sons were always crowned: Henry VIII, Charles II, William IV, George V, and George VI were second or third sons.
What’s different today is that young Louis is the first prince in two millennia to take precedence over an older sister.
So, when all is said and done, Charlotte and her descendants will push Louis even further back.
Perhaps he’ll inherit his father’s Dukedom of Cambridge as George will take Wales & Charlotte Princess Royal or Edinburgh.
As such he may have the liberty of doing his own thing – & from his high-spirited showing at the Jubilee, his look & charisma, he has already begun.
These are uncertain days but from what we know of his parents, they will ensure it’s a Happy Day for Louis.
