In a new video, Robert Irwin and Nomzamo Mbatha brought the prize to the attention of celebrities such as Hannah Waddingham, Cate Blanchett, and Heidi Klum. The Earthshot Prize, founded by Prince William, is halfway through its journey into an exciting new chapter.
The annual awards ceremony, which recognizes innovative ideas to make our planet more sustainable, will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in November 2024. It will be the fifth continent to host the prestigious event since its inception. The choice of Brazil is no coincidence.
It’s strategically aligned with the upcoming 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP30 ), which will also take place in the South American country. Though details remain under wraps, Prince William is expected to play a key role in the global summit.

In a heartfelt statement released on April 3, Prince William shared his excitement about this milestone:
“”2025 marks the halfway point of the Earthshot decade, and every year we witness the extraordinary power of human ingenuity to tackle our planet’s most pressing challenges. By awarding the Earthshot prize to Brazil, a country rich in biodiversity and environmental innovation, we are encouraging new ideas that enable a healthier and safer way of life. We are honored to reward the people who are making our world a better place for us and our children.””
The announcement was celebrated with an animated video featuring William and some familiar faces. In it, the Prince of Wales reveals that Brazil will be the next host country for Earthshot’s global ambassadors, Robert Irwin and Nomzamo Mbatha. I think Brazil is a good symbol of where the award should go.
Irwin and Mbatha then took the reins, sharing the exciting news with Earthshot Prize supporters like Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham, Billy Porter, Jacinda Ardern, Christiana Figueres, and Heidi Klum. New Brazilian defenders were also presented, including soccer legend Cafu, Maju Coutinho, Marcos Palmeira and Mauro Silva.
David Beckham couldn’t contain his enthusiasm, exclaiming, “I am so, so excited!” He described Brazil as “where nature and culture go hand-in-hand,” perfectly capturing the spirit of the event.
This year’s Earthshot Prize ceremony marks the first time the awards will be held in South America, solidifying its mission to inspire action across all corners of the globe. Over the past four years, the event has traveled from London to Boston, Singapore, and Cape Town, showcasing innovative solutions to heal our planet.
A Week of Inspiration and Action
As in previous years, five winners will be selected across five categories:
- Protect & Restore Nature
- Clean Our Air
- Revive Our Oceans
- Build A Waste-Free World
- Fix Our Climate

Fifteen finalists will be announced in September, with the winners unveiled during a star-studded awards evening in Rio de Janeiro.
Beyond the glitz and glamour of the ceremony, Prince William and his team plan to engage deeply with local communities and initiatives. For instance, during last year’s event in Cape Town, William joined forces with Robert Irwin for an early morning walk beneath the breathtaking Table Mountain. Together, they connected with rangers, conservationists, firefighters, mountain rescue volunteers, biodiversity experts, and youth advocates, emphasizing the urgent need for biodiversity conservation.

Will Kate Middleton Join Him?
While Prince William prepares for this monumental journey, fans wonder if Kate Middleton will accompany him to South America. After joining her husband in London and Boston, the Princess of Wales missed the last two ceremonies. In 2023, she stayed home to support their son, Prince George, now 11, during his important school exams. Last year, she was absent due to her ongoing cancer treatment.
