In the wake of the Paris Olympic outrage, people worldwide have been revisiting several artistically and technologically advanced Olympic openings. Among those iconic moments, the 2012 London Olympics stands out, particularly the skit featuring the Queen alongside James Bond.
I’ve watched that skit numerous times, but it wasn’t until yesterday that a dear friend pointed out the sentimental pictures that Her Majesty The Queen (HMTQ) had chosen to display.
Two black and white photos were prominently featured: one of herself as a young girl, around 9 or 10 years old, and the other of Prince William at a similar age.
These pictures carry a deep significance, especially given the careful selection of the Queen’s images displayed during such formal appearances. Isn’t it touching that the two pictures she chose for this historic skit—now etched in history—were a youthful image of herself with her beloved horse and a cheerful, young Prince William?
The 2012 Olympics marked a monumental moment for the country, and these photos subtly highlighted the special bond she shared with her heir grandson—a bond that transcended their royal duties.
From the toddler crying out for his “Gary” at a reception in Buckingham Palace to the emotionally fragile 13-year-old being guided by her; from the 15-year-old burying his mother in her presence to the 23-year-old proudly graduating from university with her by his side; from the 28-year-old marrying his longtime girlfriend in her presence to the 37-year-old new father welcoming his third child—all in her presence.
The duo shared a meaningful relationship that spanned four decades.
Whether they were sharing a laugh at an inside joke on the sidelines, stoically sharing the spotlight at official events, or spending every summer and Christmas together at Balmoral and Sandringham, Prince William and the Queen shared an unbreakable bond.
In the ITV documentary Our Queen at Ninety, the Prince looked back on their relationship and paid tribute to his grandmother:
“As I got older, it was extraordinary to have that stability with me. I was able to explore, understand, and go my own way. I appreciated that protection.”
“Having lost my mother at a very young age, it was essential for me to have someone like the Queen to inspire me, to be there for me, and to understand some of the more complicated issues surrounding bereavement.”

In a later interview, he added: “I tell people ‘she’s my grandmother first and then she’s the Queen.’ As I’ve gotten older, she’s become an even more important part of my life. Words that come from her, I take very personally and I appreciate […] When the Queen says ‘well done,’ it means so much.”
As she neared the end of her life in 2022, Prince William moved his entire family to Windsor, where she lived, to spend more time with her. In her final summer, he was by her side, just as he had been throughout his life, cherishing those precious moments with her and his cousins.
At the time of his death in 2022, Prince William gave a moving eulogy: “He was by my side in the happiest moments. And he was by my side on the saddest days of my life.” I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grandma becomes a reality.
In an even more poignant gesture, after her highly televised funeral, the new Prince of Wales made a solo return to Balmoral, where she passed, to privately mourn the loss of the woman who had mothered and molded him all his life. He reportedly stayed at Craigowan Lodge, one of his Grannie’s favorite retreats on the estate, to reflect on and honor her memory.
