If you’ve ever been bitten by a fly on horseback, you know it hurts. The fly’s jaw makes these bites so painful. The jaw is essentially the insect’s jaw.

It is scissor-shaped and can cut directly into the skin. The jaw is also equipped with small hooks so that the horse can feed better. As soon as the brake is closed, it eats the blood from the skin.
This sting can cause a severe burning sensation. Itching, inflammation and swelling around the sting are common. You can even develop a bruise.
