Why did numerous assume that King Charles did not love Diana? He didn't cheat first and he was devastated when she failed.

It is based on the engagement interview in which the couple was asked if they were in love with each other and Lady Diana initially responded somewhat sheepishly, “Of course,” while Prince Charles replied, “what does it mean to be in love.” Many of us were surprised by Charles’ words, thinking that if they were married, they must simply be in love.

We didn’t know they had only met thirteen times, with most of their courtship taking place over the phone. Thirteen meetings in person. That doesn’t mean dates, as in dining alone or heading off to a play together; it means they met together thirteen times. Some people don’t experience love at first sight, and Diana had not been in love before then-Prince Charles came along; so she fell in love or infatuation quickly. Charles did not.

King Charles had kept his friendship with Camilla through her marriage to Andrew and then his to Princess Diana, but Diana and Charles did love each other. King Charles said he did, later, after all, that happened. They were mismatched, and Diana had mental health issues, which truly affect a marriage; so they couldn’t work it out.

Diana then the Princess of Wales stepped out of the marriage for a love affair (sex) first, and I think she did it for many reasons. It isn’t as cut and dry as claiming Charles loved Camilla, so Diana left the marriage bed first. I think she felt depressed, overwhelmed, and most psychiatric illnesses don’t show up until a person’s early 20s. She had issues; with abandonment, borderline disorder, an eating disorder, postpartum depression, and paranoia. That’s a lot for any husband to handle, especially back then in the early to mid-1980s.

Charles did love Diana. She didn’t see it, and she looked for Camilla everywhere, even before they had anything going on. So yes, Charles was depressed over the death of his ex-wife, the mother of his two children. He had loved her. He couldn’t believe a woman so young could be gone, leaving him as the sole parent to two angry and hurt, grieving sons. It wasn’t easy.

A friend told Camilla that Charles was not doing well, and she was asked to buoy his spirits. Camilla always knew how to make then-Prince Charles laugh, so she did that. They spent time together when he wasn’t on tours of engagements or with his sons, who weren’t ready for their father to marry Camilla. Not so soon after Diana’s death.

Before Diana died, she and Charles were on good terms and friends. I think the two of them would have loved their sons completely, and then Harry wouldn’t have as many issues as he does right now. It is a tragedy that Diana died, and King Charles now has to hold the monarchy up as a higher priority than his son. But that’s the way it is, and wishing it away won’t change a thing. People can only try to move forward positively, being a change to become a better person.
