Prince William leads training for his father King Charles' first birthday parade as monarch.

Prince William is the honorary colonel of the Welsh Guards, and he ensures his regiment is prepared for the monarch to view. William also watched rehearsals of the other regiments to see if they are ready for next weekend’s Trooping the Color. The hot weather, reaching almost 90 degrees, caused several soldiers to pass out.

The Prince of Wales took a look at the 1,500 dog snouts and 300 horses that will take part in the March of Trooping the Color on June 17.

The 40-year-old Prince of Wales is leading the final training sessions before the Flag Parade, the public celebration of the British monarch’s birthday, which this time will take place at the Horse Guards Parade on June 17. It will be the first birthday parade in the reign of King Charles, while Queen Elizabeth held the event regularly on the same days.

On Saturday morning, Prince William proudly ensured that the Welsh Guards – of which he is an honorary colonel – and other members of the Household Division were well prepared for next Saturday’s parade. On that occasion, the Welsh Guards will have the honor of participating in the parade: Their flag will be presented to the King.

“The purpose of the colonel’s review is to decide if they are ready for the monarch,” an army source told PEOPLE. The Prince of Wales led the procession on horseback on the Mall of London. He wore the Order of the Guard of Honor, complete with a bearskin cap, tunic, garter, and badge.

More than 1,500 dogs and 300 horses from the Household Division of the Welsh, Irish, Scottish, Grenadier, and Coldstream Guards paraded to be tested by Prince William during the rehearsal. They performed complex battle drills accompanied by a musical program that included a “distinctly Welsh theme,” according to Napoleon’s office.

The music and the procession will be followed on Saturday by the royal family – including Kate Middleton and Queen Camilla – and millions of TV viewers.
