The Prince understands he has a job to do and regardless of politics or a priori, a good heart and genuine nature universally change the conversation That is what happened when Pro republic, Alastair Campbell crossed paths with Prince William and got an interview from him for GQ in 2017. In one of the Royal’s best interviews ever given, Alastair had some blunt questions and went in depth with Prince William not only on the topic of mental health and his job as RAF SAR but about Diana, the Monarchy, and its main players, his vision and his relationship with the press.
At the end of the meeting, Republican Alastair Campbell said, “When they went down this road [Shaping Heads Together], the Republican in me was angry that they could draw so much attention to their work; but the mental health activist in Time To Change was elated. To my surprise, I was asked to participate in a film and talk to my partner Fiona about how my mental health problems affect us. Even more surprising was the fact that William, who rarely gives in-depth interviews, agreed to be interviewed for GQ. I had met him a few times before, for example during the British and Irish Lion’s tour of New Zealand in 2005 and most recently at a dinner where I asked him if he would follow his grandmother’s example if he became king and if “as monarch, he would never give an interview.”

Campbell continued: “Here, I was keen to test two things in particular. One was whether his commitment to this cause was real and whether he had a proper understanding of the issues. You can make up your mind on that, but after an hour and a half at the palace, mine was made up in his favor. Secondly, I wanted to see how close to the public persona the more private man in his habitat might be. Would he speak with the same stilted style that seems to characterize his public speaking? He didn’t.
Would he have a sense of humor? He did. Would he stand on ceremony? He didn’t. Was there any real passion behind the shy exterior? There was. Indeed, were she still here, I would have called my mum and told her: “Good news, I liked him.’
