Harry and Meghan's Engagement: A Prelude to Royal Drama

Harry and Meghan remained engaged for almost six months. When Harry told the press that Meghan, by marrying him, would have the family she never had, both the Ragland (mom Doria’s family) and the Markle family were astonished. Interestingly, Trevor Engelson, Meghan’s first husband, made a similar statement at their wedding, saying Meghan now had the family she never had. However, Meghan’s family was close-knit, loving, and supportive. Although Doria wasn’t the ideal family member, the rest of the Ragland family were good people.

The Markles enjoyed fun times together, and even after Thomas divorced Doria, he still invited her over every Christmas. Both sides were baffled by the statements given by the two men married to Meghan. What was she telling them both?

Samantha Markle was quite prescient when she wrote on Twitter (X) to Harry, “If she (Meghan) will treat our family this way, she’ll treat your family this way.”

Many laughed at Samantha, thinking she was jealous or angry, and they did not pay attention to her words. One person who likely understood full well was Lady Susan Hussey. She had worked for Queen Elizabeth and had been asked to work for Meghan by giving her advice on how to become a royal.

Lady Susan Hussey was discussing the idea of Meghan joining the National Theatre at lunch when she spoke. “It’s all going to end in tears. Mark my words.”

Several people thought Harry and Meghan’s marriage wouldn’t work out to be a magical, lovely relationship filled with happiness, love, and a life full of serving the monarch and monarchy. How right they were.

After huge crowds came out to see Meghan in Cardiff and Birmingham, she headed to Belfast, Ireland, and her staff wondered why Meghan didn’t appear interested in the country at all. She knew nothing about the place and didn’t bother to learn from her advisors. By the time Meghan arrived in Edinburgh, Scotland, she had stopped paying attention to the established royal protocols and was openly kissing strangers, greeting people, taking selfies, walking ahead of Harry (the royal walks ahead, the non-royal a step or two behind), and signing autographs for people in the crowd.

Meghan didn’t even dress like a royal, as she wasn’t modest and liked to wear see-through clothes when she went out. Meghan didn’t mind muddy shoes or sloppy clothes, and why should she mind hair flying everywhere? She certainly didn’t respect royal standards of cleanliness and decorum, and some loved her for it, but many saw it as a gesture of contempt for royalty.

In Edinburgh, Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne, Meghan’s old manager, was asked to be in a group that met with either Harry or Meghan. Gina mentioned she had worked for Meghan, so could she be in Meghan’s group? Gina waited to see the woman who ghosted her as soon as she told Meghan marrying royalty would carry its problems. Suddenly, as both groups began to get to know the couple, Gina was told to meet Harry instead of Meghan. Gina turned to Harry, “I used to work with Meghan. Did she put me in your group?” Harry refused to answer, and when Meghan turned away from Gina, she tried to approach Meg but was blocked by bodyguards.

Gina learned when Meghan is done needing someone, she is truly done with them for good. They are ghosted and ignored. This is a pattern of Meghan’s, and her actions have been observed so many times over that people actively avoid the people-using, social climbing Meghan because of this. One can’t treat people poorly and expect others not to notice. Meghan has few friends and little money as a result.

Back to the halcyon days of the engagement. Kensington Palace (meaning the people working for Meghan and Harry operating out of KP) worried Meghan didn’t understand she was popular because she was marrying Harry. She thought she was the center of attention and was admired for being wonderful, even though it was Harry’s fiancée who had given her these advantages. If Meghan didn’t understand that concept, how could she learn she wasn’t a celebrity in Hollywood?

Meghan had to act like a royal, and royals exist to cast a light on others and their achievements, they celebrate national events and represent their country when abroad. Royalty does not seek to shine the light on their accomplishments, and they are appreciated when they wear modest clothes or take commercial flights rather than private planes. This ideal is often misunderstood by those outside of Britain, who may see royals as celebrities.

Meanwhile, Meghan stewed about living in a cottage while the direct heir to the throne lived in a twenty-room abode within Kensington Palace. Never mind that Prince William would be king one day and that his wife, Catherine, was about to give birth to their third child. Meghan hung out at Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire and felt at home in Soho’s around Europe and Canada, thanks in part to Markus Anderson and even Princess Eugenie. Harry rented a place nearby where they could entertain friends, but Meghan had few British friends.

The royals decided to unveil the ‘Fab Four’ in March in association with the Royal Foundation. The public was still wowed by Meghan, and Harry still had his persona. They weren’t married yet, so Meghan was on her best behavior. She was the fiancée, and she had to seal the deal before she could truly show her true nature to Harry and the royals.
