In recent decades, many royal books have emerged, penned by royal historians and reporters detailing the lives of the British Royal Family. The narrative is often shaped by anonymous “palace sources” or individuals “close to the family”, recounting what the royals are rumored to have said or done.
The first significant shift came with Prince Harry’s memoir, ‘Spare’. Written in the first person, it provided his perspective on the royal drama, a rare and personal take on royal literature. At the time, ‘Spare’ was seen as a revolutionary book in the world of royal watching.
However, Harry quickly lost credibility as he launched a relentless campaign of accusations and slander against the Royal Family, particularly targeting his brother, Prince William. His constant interviews, where he labeled William as his “archnemesis”, revealed a narrative fueled by anger, bias, and resentment.
As a result, it became difficult to take ‘Spare’ seriously. The book, despite its hype, was essentially a smear campaign against Prince William, who is referenced over 300 times across 416 pages, making it clear that Harry’s focus was on his brother, not the family at large.
In stark contrast, ‘Meet Ella’ by James Middleton offers a refreshing take. Unlike most royal books, ‘Meet Ella’ isn’t centered on the Royal Family. Instead, it’s about Ella, James’ dog, and the extraordinary bond between them. The story delves into how Ella helped James overcome suicidal depression and eventually find love and family.
For the first time, the royals are merely secondary characters in someone else’s narrative.
At the heart of ‘Meet Ella’ are James Middleton, his dog Ella, and the Middleton family. The royals, as in-laws, are mentioned only in passing. The three key royal figures that feature in James’ personal story are Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and Prince William:
- Prince Philip had a unique connection with James’ grandfather, Peter Middleton, who, like Philip, served as a WWII RAF fighter pilot.
- Queen Elizabeth II played a pivotal role in welcoming the Middletons into the Royal Family and mentored Catherine, helping solidify her relationship and marriage to William.
- Prince William, who married James’ sister, Catherine, has been intertwined with the Middleton family for two decades.
It’s no surprise that these three figures were highlighted in the serialized version of ‘Meet Ella’.
More significantly, ‘Meet Ella’ offers the first and only book to give us a candid glimpse of Prince William as a boyfriend, and later as the husband and father he is today.
This is remarkable because such insights were expected from Prince Harry. Ironically, even Harry’s tell-all book failed to provide a positive portrayal of William. This is the first book where Prince William isn’t attacked or vilified, and it’s somewhat poignant that it took a Middleton to offer this perspective.

Over the past six years, countless royal books have surfaced, many of which use William’s name to sell copies but inevitably end up criticizing him and his family. Recent examples include Robert Hardman’s “unauthorized” biography of King Charles III, where William is vilified through palace sources, and of course, Harry’s ‘Spare’.
In contrast, ‘Meet Ella’ explains why Prince William finds solace in the Middleton family home. It’s a place of normality, warmth, loyalty, and love—a refuge from the demands of royal life.
This heartfelt book finally offers an unprecedented look into the “William” that Catherine fell in love with the man she once described as “incredibly kind” and the one she feels “very lucky” to have by her side.
It’s the same William she affectionately wrote to on his birthday: “Happy birthday Papa, we all love you so much! Cx”, and the same man she gazes at adoringly in public. Recent videos have even shown the couple’s affection on display, further solidifying their bond.
Beyond Ella’s touching story, ‘Meet Ella’ by James Middleton gives readers a rare and unique glimpse into Prince William, not as a royal figure, but as a loving family man.
