The sheer gall of Australia’s state premiers to refuse to meet King Charles III and Queen Camilla on their upcoming tour is nothing short of a disgraceful affront to both the monarchy and the nation they claim to serve.
One might have assumed that, as representatives of a constitutional monarchy, these premiers would grasp the fundamental importance of the Crown in Australia’s political structure – yet, alas, it seems they are more concerned with their “long-standing engagements” than with performing their duties with any semblance of decorum.
Let us not mince words: this is an outright slap in the face, a pitiful display of woke-fearing timidity by politicians who have clearly lost sight of their roles. Are these individuals so beholden to the winds of political correctness that they cannot muster the basic respect owed to a visiting Head of State, especially one who is the figurehead of the very nation they ostensibly serve? It beggars belief. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen’s excuse of “internal and external commitments” rings hollow, as do the flimsy justifications from her fellow premiers. They might as well have said, “We simply can’t be bothered.”
Even more offensive is the notion that these absences reflect the will of the Australian people – an absurd claim, considering support for the monarchy has *increased* since the last referendum. This is not the voice of the public, but rather a craven attempt by certain leaders to pander to the loud but ultimately insignificant calls for republicanism. The reality is that ordinary Australians still hold deep respect for the monarchy, a fact that will be made abundantly clear when they turn out in droves to greet Their Majesties, no doubt in stark contrast to the politicians hiding behind their petty excuses.

The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, who ought to step in and remind these premiers of their duties, will, of course, do nothing. Why? Because his own anti-monarchist stance is no secret – an avowed socialist and republican, Albanese has made his disdain for the Crown clear, thus providing little incentive for his colleagues to show the proper respect. This, of course, only adds to the debacle, with Albanese’s silence serving as tacit approval of the premiers’ disgraceful behaviour.
Let us not forget, the monarchy is not merely some ceremonial relic to be trotted out at state occasions – it is a living institution, one that has provided stability, continuity, and a sense of national identity for Australia for generations. The idea that these premiers, elected to serve under this very system, would snub their soveregn is not only offensive but deeply misguided.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla, despite the cowardly snubs from these so-called leaders, will undoubtedly receive the warm welcome they deserve from the people of Australia. And that, perhaps, is the greatest irony of all – while the premiers hide in their ivory towers, out of touch and trembling at the thought of offending their anti-monarchist supporters, the ordinary Australians they claim to represent will stand proudly to greet the King and Queen with the respect and dignity they so richly deserve.
