Ephraim Hardcastle is looking at it the wrong way. Camilla as Queen consort does technically outrank Prince William as Prince of Wales and therefore CAN represent the King at the commonwealth. So it is not a Slight to him. William is not power-hungry and is prioritizing his family at the moment anyway. His time will come to lead; As HMTQ said: “No one can stop the passing of time”
What this decision clearly outlines, however, is the issue the Monarchy faces when the Consort is NOT the Mother of the Heir.
The Monarchy is the Heirs, never the consorts, and the future of the Monarchy relies on the heirs. This was the first time in British royal history, that a King married a woman who was not the mother of the Next heir and the problems are obvious.
Queen Elizabeth II has NEVER replaced Prince Philip with her heir Charles. There are several reasons for this: firstly, the Queen was committed to the monarchy and the promotion of the monarchy, and as such always promoted her heir, which is not the case in today’s monarchy.

Secondly, even if she had wanted to, the DOE would never have agreed, as she too was a monarchist and her son Charles was the heir. So she had a vested interest in Charles shining and becoming king, because Charles is her heir and her legacy.
The same thing happened when Diana was married to Charles. As she has said in an interview: “I’ve heard people say to me that, ‘Diana’s out to destroy the monarchy,’ which has bewildered me; because why would I want to destroy something that is my children’s future?”
In reality, Diana may not have wanted to see Charles on the throne, but as the heir’s mother, she wanted to see William on the throne because it was her legacy and inheritance. Therefore had she been consort, KC would never have needed to deputise her and she would never have wanted to be deputised over her Heir. A mother ALWAYS wants to see their children shine brighter as pride.
The issue with the current monarchy is that they have to pull rank since Queen Camilla has NO vested interest in the future of the Monarchy. That is the cold truth.
Prince William is Not her son and Prince George is Not her grandson. Ironically, It is Diana’s lineage and heritage who will inherit the Throne and who are the future of the Monarchy So QC would feel no pride in watching William lead. She might even feel slighted since she outranks him.

This is the true problem that is highlighted by KC’s choice to deputize Camilla over his heir: In deputizing William, King Charles would have been promoting the Monarchy and its future. Which promotes stability.
In deputizing Camilla, he has promoted his reign and his Wife; Which is an odd choice to make regarding the Monarchy.
It is a tough choice but it goes back to traditions and rules, not feelings. KC’s job should always be to promote the strength and stability of the Monarchy. This is not happening, But it goes back to the old rule: The Consort should also be the Mother of the Heir, Unfortunately, Life happened.
When William and Catherine ascend, the Monarchy will therefore naturally shine because Catherine is the mother of Prince George and will therefore, just like Prince Philip did, have no reason to ever pull rank on her son. She will let him, rightfully shine for the monarchy to project strength and stability because the Future of the Monarchy will be Catherine’s lineage.
