On 10 September 2022, Prince William and Catherine, who now bear the title Prince and Princess of Wales, appeared alongside Prince Harry and Meghan on a walk in Windsor after the Queen’s death. The world was left confused as to whether it was a sign of reconciliation or a show of unity that could eventually lead to reconciliation, given H&M’s continuous attacks on the monarchy.
Later in 2023, it was revealed by H&M’s spokesperson that it was a “frigid show of unity,” and that neither W&C exchanged words with H&M during their car ride.
However, if one had paid attention to Prince William’s calm and poised demeanor in public, they would have never known. He seemed relaxed and even chatted publicly with Harry and Meghan while showing off the floral arrangements. It was the rest of the group who displayed clear signs of unease and tension: Catherine made a point to never interact with H&M and only communicated with William, staying on the outer side of him.
The H&Ms were visibly uncomfortable and stayed together, despite Harry’s attempts to entertain the others. The only one who kept up the “facade” was William, who also invited H&M at the last minute.
Insiders call William “unpredictable” because of his ability to remain calm under pressure, bury his feelings and thoughts behind a constructed facade, and make silent moves behind the scenes that surprise everyone. Like his mentor and grandmother, he has mastered the art of silence to cover his decisive moves.
That’s why the Royal world was surprised when, in March 2019, after spending ten years working together, Prince William decided to split his household from his brother in an official statement by BP and KP. Even after watching William and Catherine interact with H&M at the Commonwealth service that same month, no one was aware of what was happening behind the scenes. William is a silent operator. He hides what he knows and what is truly going on behind the scenes very well. After all, he was raised on the old school mantra to “never complain and never explain,” which also means that dirty laundry is washed privately at home, never in public.
