Alastair asked, “But how hard is it for you to suffer, or try to suffer, under this extraordinary level of global surveillance and this ridiculous, endless fascination with every detail of your life and your mother’s life?
William replied frankly, “It’s true that it’s harder. But it doesn’t make you any less human. We’re the same person, it’s part of the job to care. The fact is, we can’t carry all our baggage everywhere. We have to project the strength of the UK; it sounds ridiculous, but that’s what we have to do. We can’t carry all our luggage with us and show it everywhere. “My mother exposed herself and that’s why people were so moved by her. But I’m determined to protect myself and the children, which means preserving something for us. I think I have a greater sense of self-preservation.
This year was, to me, the moment when those words he spoke were demonstrated in actions. This year was the biggest familial crisis threatening the stability of his family of five: From having his wife undergo major abdominal surgery to learning that his father had cancer; to then discover that cancer had been present in Catherine and she needed preventative chemo. Add to that the stress of the media and public harassment directed his way while he protected his family’s privacy and balanced his duties with supporting his wife and children. William has been through the wringer physically and emotionally.
Yet, he has stayed true to his words to Alastair Campbell: Through it all, Prince William has kept his emotional baggage to himself, leaving it at home when he had to be in the spotlight, and has kept his head high, projecting the strength of the UK and the Monarchy at all times.

Anyone who has lived long enough knows that it is very difficult to keep a smile on your face when you feel like crying or screaming, let alone having to do so while facing the public spotlight when the lives of the people you love are threatened by cancer.
Yet Prince William has done so, brilliantly and with good nature; acting as if everything was alright because, as he was taught by the Queen, he had to be strong while his wife and father needed space and time.
A couple of months ago, it felt like the Monarchy was crumbling, but Prince William calmly maintained his stoicism in public, calming any alarm with his casual nonchalance.
As he celebrates his 42nd birthday amidst a brighter outlook for both Catherine and the King, let’s celebrate his steadfastness and calm assurance during the hardest time; as well as his maturity and commitment to project the strength of the UK and the Monarchy at all times, especially when it was emotionally hard for him to do so.
Wishing the Prince of Wales a very Happy 42nd birthday surrounded by Catherine and his children.
