Despite being born the Heir to the British throne, Prince William only embraced his role as a full-time working Senior Royal in 2017. Before stepping into the spotlight, he chose a path that many of us can relate to: school, university, and then a career in public service. First, as an RAF Search and Rescue (SAR) pilot in Wales, and later as an Air Ambulance Pilot. In doing so, Prince William became the first Monarch in British history to truly work and live among us.
Back in April 2013, while filming the BBC One documentary ‘Helicopter Rescue’, Prince William shared a heartfelt sentiment that encapsulates his character: “There’s no greater feeling than when you do some good or save someone’s life. I don’t think there’s any greater calling in life than to be able to see a son or daughter’s face when you bring their mother or father back from the edge of death. It’s quite powerful.”
Indeed, Prince William is not just a ceremonial Knight of the Garter —he’s a real-life knight in shining armor. His bravery and skills have contributed to saving 149 lives during his time in Wales.

A Rescue That Changed Lives
In August 2012, just a year after his royal wedding, Prince William embarked on a rescue mission that showcased his quick thinking and courage. Two teenage sisters were bodyboarding off the Welsh coast when they were swept away by a current and pushed out to sea.
While the 13-year-old was rescued by a surfer and brought back to shore, the 16-year-old remained in the water. Luckily, William had just landed his Sea King helicopter nearby after a routine exercise when the emergency call came in.
Less than 38 seconds after receiving the alert, Prince William headed to the scene aboard the RAF rescue helicopter to save them. With the help of two surfers waving and pointing to the girl’s location, he skillfully maneuvered the helicopter while his winchman, Master Aircrew Harry Harrison, pulled the teenager to safety.
The entire rescue took less than 40 seconds —their fastest ever, as William later revealed to Channel 5. Harrison recounted the harrowing moment: “When I arrived at their home, the older of the two girls was visibly exhausted and on the verge of succumbing. You never know what to expect when you are called to an emergency, but in this case, we arrived just in time and were able to save two young lives.”
Both sisters were taken to a nearby hospital, where they recovered from shock and hypothermia.

A Heartwarming Reunion
A year later, in 2013, Prince William, now a new dad, visited Wales for a royal engagement. During a walkabout, a familiar face appeared in the crowd—Sharon West, the 17-year-old girl he had saved the previous year, accompanied by her family.
Not recognizing her at first, William shook her hand. Sharon introduced herself, saying: “I just wanted to thank you for rescuing me last year.”
To this, Prince William replied with genuine warmth: “Was it you on the beach, you and your sister? How are you? Are you all right?”
When Sharon nodded and thanked him, William humbly deflected the praise, emphasizing the teamwork involved: “I’m glad you made a full recovery. A lot of the time, you never meet up with anyone after you’ve done it.”
Later, speaking to the press, Sharon shared her gratitude: “He rescued me when I got swept out to sea. If he’d been a few seconds late, I wouldn’t be here today.”
