Prince William marked a historic night for Aston Villa with passionate support and celebratory moments following the club’s Europa League triumph in Istanbul.
On May 20, Aston Villa secured a remarkable 3–0 victory over German side SC Freiburg in the Europa League final, earning the club its first European trophy since 1982. The milestone win was celebrated not only by fans worldwide but also by one of the team’s most devoted supporters — the Prince of Wales.
A Royal Presence in the Stands
Prince William, 43, traveled to Turkey to witness the final in person. Known for his long-standing support of Aston Villa, the future king was visibly emotional during the match at Tupras Stadium.
Seated alongside close friends, including Thomas van Straubenzee — godfather to Princess Charlotte — the prince applauded, cheered enthusiastically, recorded moments on his phone, and was even seen wiping away tears after the final whistle.
Inside the Dressing Room Celebrations
According to BBC reports, Prince William visited the team in the dressing room before kickoff to offer words of encouragement. After the match, he joined the players in celebration.
Defender Matty Cash shared that the prince enjoyed a celebratory drink with the squad following the victory.
“He was in there having a beer with us. He’s just delighted. He’s such a big supporter,”
Cash told the BBC. “He’s always coming to the training ground and Villa Park. He deserves moments like these.”
