A Global Call to Action on World Oceans Day

On the eve of World Oceans Day, Prince William emphasized his commitment to the environment in a highly praised speech in Monaco, which was also attended by other heads of state and government and members of royal families. French President Emmanuel Macron, Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles, and Prince Albert of Monaco attended the event, which took place at the prestigious Grimaldi Forum.

In his moving speech, William spoke passionately:

“Today we are united by our deep connection to the ocean and our concern for its safety. For many of us, it is a place where some of our happiest memories were created… where we discovered the wonders of nature… and where we all depend on its great resources for our sustenance and survival.”

He continued in an urgent tone:

“Yet it often seems distant and removed from our daily lives, so we forget how essential it is. The truth is that healthy oceans are indispensable to all life on Earth.”

This bold plea came as part of the Blue Economy and Finance Forum, a critical step toward the upcoming 2025 UN Ocean Conference. It highlighted William’s rising diplomatic profile and his unwavering commitment to protecting the planet.

A Legacy of Conservation: Following in His Father’s Footsteps

As King Charles continues cancer treatment, Prince William has increasingly stepped into the spotlight. Like his father, he has long championed environmental causes, making ocean protection a natural extension of his advocacy.

With oceans covering 70% of Earth’s surface, generating half of its oxygen, and feeding over 3 billion people, William emphasized that safeguarding marine biodiversity isn’t just a niche issue—it’s a global imperative. Yet, alarmingly, only 3% of the ocean is currently protected, far short of the goal to safeguard 30% of land and sea by 2030.

For William, optimism is key. He believes that while the threats to marine ecosystems are dire, solutions are within reach—and progress is already underway.

Earthshot Prize: Scaling Solutions for a Sustainable Future

The Earthshot Prize initiative, created by Williams ten years ago, highlights his commitment to innovation and action. This award, whose next edition will be held in Rio de Janeiro, aims to promote and raise awareness of practical environmental solutions. Several finalists from previous editions gathered in Monaco to report on their inspiring progress.

Among them was Coral Vita, winner of the 2021 Earthshot Prize, awarded for its pioneering work in coral reef restoration. By growing corals on land and then reintroducing them into the sea, the organization has cultivated more than 100,000 corals of 52 different species. Another finalist, Pristine Seas, has collaborated with indigenous communities and local authorities to help protect three huge marine areas, whose total surface area is equivalent to the size of Germany.

These stories of resilience and ingenuity are a ray of hope and demonstrate that collective action can lead to significant change.

A conversation with Sir David Attenborough

The Monaco event took place just one day after Kensington Palace released a moving short film showing a recent conversation between William and legendary conservationist Sir David Attenborough. At 99, the famous television presenter continues to inspire action with his new documentary Ocean with David Attenborough.

Their exchange added another layer to William’s growing role in elevating environmental voices and championing solutions. Together, they reminded viewers of the interconnectedness of humanity and nature—a theme central to William’s advocacy.

A Deepening Commitment to a Sustainable Future

As William builds toward the fifth year of the Earthshot Prize, his efforts reflect a profound dedication—not just to raising awareness but to driving policy, securing funding, and fostering innovation. His vision is clear: to create a sustainable future for the planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems.

Through his impassioned speeches, bold initiatives, and collaborative spirit, Prince William is proving himself to be a formidable force on the world stage. His message is one of hope, urgency, and action—a rallying cry for us all to protect the ocean and ensure a thriving planet for generations to come.
