Tell Me About... The Queen's Reading Room

It was announced in February that the Queen’s Reading Room will become a charity. This decision will raise the profile of the online book club while Her Majesty continues to fulfill her royal duties as Queen.

Reading is one of Her Majesty’s passions and she has been committed to encouraging young people to read for years.

But what is the Queen’s Reading Room and why was it created? We take a look at this new charity.

The Origins of the Queen’s Reading Room

When it was launched in 2021, the Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room was intended to be a “celebration of literature in all its forms” and a “hub for literary communities around the world.” About her reading list to become the Reading Room in 2020, Camilla said, “In these difficult times, when we are away from our loved ones, many of us find comfort in reading, which stimulates our imagination, takes us on journeys, and makes us laugh.”

The idea for the online reading room was born when the Duchess of Cornwall shared two sets of book recommendations to keep people entertained during periods of rest. We remember the two lists here and here.

The online book club began with Charlie Mackesy’s “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse,” and there have been several rounds of recommendations from Her Majesty, each with four different books. The books selected vary by genre and include timeless classics as well as newly published titles.

The Duchess of Cambridge also recommended children’s books for the online book club for World Book Day 2022. Catherine’s recommendations include books she has enjoyed over the years, as well as favorite books by her three children.

The Reading Room has a worldwide influence, with a club called “The Camilla Club,” a group inspired by Camilla’s book club. Camilla met some of the members during a trip to Northern Ireland in May 2022.

She also spoke about the impact of her book club in an interview with British Vogue on the occasion of her 75th birthday.

Why did the online book club become a charity?

The charity was created to help further people find and connect with books, enrich their lives, and turn them into lifelong compendiums.

This newly established charity aims to give adults and children in the UK and around the world the opportunity to foster their love and passion for literature. It aims to build bridges between writers and readers through accessible and educational content.

The Queen is considering making her Reading Room a charity.

In February 2023, the Queen hosted an event to celebrate the alternate anniversary of her Reading Room. Her Majesty said she was” pleased” to hear that her Reading Room would come to a charity.

As some of you may know, my Reading Room began with a list of nine of my favorite books, which I scribbled on a piece of paper during the first lock-in. Today, it has grown into a global community of more than 155,000 people, supported by internationally known literary figures and thousands of readers.

I am pleased to announce that the Reading Room has become a charity that strives to build bridges between readers and writers by helping people of all ages and backgrounds find and engage with books.”

She added that the development of her Reading Room would not have been possible without the support of her supporters and writers, whom she thanks for their “support and contribution.”

On behalf of all book lovers and book clubs around the world, thank you for sharing your talent and working to promote literacy and the love of literature.”

Queen’s Reading Room Festival.

It has been announced that the Queen’s Reading Room will host its first erudite festival, the Queen’s Reading Room Festival, at Hampton Court Palace on June 11, 2023. Dame Judi Dench, David Olusoga, Kamila Shamsie, Austentatious, Ben Macintyre, Ken Follett, and multitudinous others will speak there.

Guests can explore the palace through literary tours, walk around the floors where Shakespeare performed with his King’s Men, hear poetry recited by some of our country’s finest actors, and attend performances by renowned artists.
