Queen Elizabeth’s health had been deteriorating for several years, as she was believed to be suffering from a form of cancer. Instead of staying at Windsor, Elizabeth opted for her usual routine and spent the summer in Scotland at Balmoral. Her Majesty traveled there as usual and enjoyed time with her family, who visited her as usual.

No one could have foreseen what happened on the morning of September 8. Queen Elizabeth had lost more and more weight, but she did not know how long she had to live. The situation worsened in the place she loved most. I always thought it was wonderful that Scotland was the place where the late queen died. The Scottish people could pay their last respects to her in Edinburgh if they wanted to, and the Queen spent her last days in the place where she was happiest.
At that time, Queen Elizabeth was not living at Buckingham Palace. She had moved to Windsor to contain the pandemic, and Prince Philip spent the last months of her life at Windsor Castle. They spent quiet times together at Windsor Castle which they normally did not have, and after the death of her husband of over 70 years, Elizabeth decided to stay at Windsor. She had more family around her, it wasn’t London, and she had room to breathe.

On the day of his death, Queen Elizabeth had her daughter, Princess Anne, with her at Balmoral while the then Prince Charles stayed at nearby Birkhall. Would this have happened if she had been at Windsor? Perhaps. But Elizabeth had her daughter and son with her that morning, a beautiful late summer day in Scotland.
