Or we may punish the opposite person by being critical or maybe engaging in nasty behavior, essentially ensuring we do not get the loving responses we are saying we would like . the truth is most of the people can only tolerate a particular amount of closeness. We are defensive about letting somebody else in. In effect, on a deeper level, we do not necessarily want the love we are saying we would like.
