Prince William Attends Royal Ascot Alone After Kate Cancels

Princess Kate is understood to be disappointed not to attend Ascot as planned.

In a last-minute change of plans, Prince William made a solo appearance at the prestigious Royal Ascot on June 18. The event, held at Ascot Racecourse in Ascot, England, is one of the most celebrated occasions in the British social calendar. However, his wife, Kate Middleton, was notably absent, having canceled her attendance just hours before the festivities began.

Kate’s name had initially been included in the official carriage list for the iconic Royal Procession. Yet, a sudden update from Ascot confirmed that the Princess of Wales would not be joining the royal family at the equestrian event. While the reasons behind the cancellation remain undisclosed, it’s understood that Kate is disappointed by the turn of events but remains focused on striking the right balance as she continues to ease back into her public-facing duties.

Kate’s Health Journey: A Reminder of Resilience

Kate Middleton has faced significant personal challenges over the past year. In March 2023, she revealed that she was undergoing treatment for cancer, a diagnosis discovered following planned abdominal surgery earlier that January. By September, she announced the completion of her chemotherapy, and in January 2024, she shared the hopeful news that she is now in remission.

Since then, the Princess of Wales has gradually resumed her royal responsibilities, making appearances at key events such as Trooping the Colour and Garter Day. However, balancing her health and public engagements remains a delicate process. Her absence from Royal Ascot underscores the importance of prioritizing well-being while navigating the demands of royal life.

A Royal Procession Without Kate

Despite Kate’s absence, Prince William arrived at Ascot in style, traveling in the first carriage of the Royal Procession alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Prince Saud bin Khalid Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, golfer Justin Rose and his wife (also named Kate ), and Lady Sarah Chatto, daughter of Princess Margaret, followed in subsequent carriages.

Though Princess Kate wasn’t present, her family still made an appearance. Her mother, Carole Middleton, and sister-in-law, Alizée Thevenet —the wife of Kate’s brother, James Middleton —were spotted enjoying the event together. Carole, who attended Ascot last year, famously received some chivalrous assistance from William when her shoe got stuck in the grass during a previous visit.

Friends of the couple, including Thomas Straubenzee, James Meade, and their respective spouses, were also seen soaking up the lively atmosphere of the races.

A Fitting Honor for Prince William

The day was not without its highlights for Prince William. Later in the event, he presented the trophy to the winner of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, a moment steeped in tradition and symbolic of his role as the male heir to the British throne. The honor served as a poignant reminder of the weight—and privilege—of his royal title.

A Busy Weekend for the Royal Family

The week leading up to Royal Ascot was packed with activity for the Wales family. On Saturday, June 14, they attended the Trooping the Colour parade in celebration of King Charles’ official birthday. Joining them were their three children: Prince George, 11; Princess Charlotte, 10; and Prince Louis, 7. To mark Father’s Day on Sunday, the family released two heartwarming portraits of William with his children—a touching tribute to their close bond.

On Monday, June 16, the couple attended the Garter Day Service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. This marked Princess Kate’s final duty of the week, as she did not accompany William to the luncheon following the service or the reception at Windsor Castle on June 17 for The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales, which they jointly patronize.

A Message of Understanding and Grace

While fans may have been disappointed not to see Kate Middleton at Royal Ascot, her decision to step back highlights the importance of self-care and resilience. As she continues her journey toward full recovery, her presence—at events or otherwise—remains a testament to her strength and grace under pressure.

For now, all eyes remain on Prince William and his unwavering support for his wife during this transitional period. Together, they remind us that even amidst challenges, love, understanding, and unity can guide the way forward.
