No. Twenty-five years is a long time to stay in a marriage where there is little love and no partner. If Diana had been more resilient, if King Charles hadn’t met the love of his life in his youth, the marriage might have had a chance of continuing. But for Prince Charles, old-fashioned rules applied, such as marrying a virgin (in the 70s and 80s) from a good family.

These rules were ignored by Princess Isabel and Philip, who married for love, despite being German and having no money. Prince Albert married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon for love, although this union was by the rules. The fact that Prince Charles was told at the time that he couldn’t marry Camilla, even though they loved each other, is tragic.
Charles had to make a second choice, who should he marry when he was almost 30? He dated Sarah, Diana’s older sister, and it could have worked, but she told the press about their relationship and he dropped her. Lady Diana Spencer had only met Prince Charles in person 13 times before he asked her to marry him. She laughed because she thought he was joking, but Charles was deadly serious.

Why be indefinitely married and unhappy just to become a royal consort? Diana had no idea how long Queen Elizabeth would live and Di probably thought the queen wouldn’t live another quarter of a century. Even the idea of spending another five years with Charles was an abomination to Princess Diana, who wanted to be loved and adored, and to Prince Charles, who needed a companion who would support, understand, and respect him.
Princess Diana could have lived a wonderful aristocratic life with a husband who wasn’t in the public eye, which would have allowed her to seek psychological help to deal with some of her problems and be loved by a husband and children. Instead, Diana chose the seductive role of Princess of Wales, even though she knew or suspected that her fiancé had already given his heart to another woman. King Charles needed someone who would make him laugh, would give him the confidence to do what he thought was right, despite his mother, father, and grandmother. Charles didn’t need a woman obsessed with her fame. He needed a companion who would support him, and Camilla always did.

Prince Charles had no sexual relations with Camilla and loved Diana as much as he could in the early years of their marriage. He loved his children and even Charles knew that Princess Diana was a good mother to his children, so they had that in common. Princess Diana knew that part of her husband truly loved her, but she didn’t know how to find out what was wrong in their marriage.
Being queen or king is hard work, no matter what you think. You have to deal with daily paperwork, visits, meetings, garden parties, state parties, dinners, lunches, and meetings with lots of people, even on days when you’d rather rest in a quiet room because of a persistent headache. It’s a job for life. There is no retirement plan, except death; liberation comes with death.
Why should Diana stay married just to occupy an important position as consort that only ends with her last breath?
King Charles has been much happier since his marriage to Camilla in 2005, although he was devastated by the death of his first wife. Charles’ friends feared for him after Diana’s death and turned to Camilla, a divorced woman, to help Prince Charles out of his depression. Camilla helped him and the couple are happy together and it shows!
If Princess Diana had been alive, she would have found love and remarried. I think she would have found the happiness and fulfillment she was looking for with a second husband. She too would have gained years of happiness.
