Do Princes William and Harry have a close relationship with their maternal family, the Spencers?

Princes William and Harry seem to have a very close relationship with the Spencer branch of their family. Both princes have visited the sisters of their mother, Princess Diana. Both made several visits to Althorp, Diana’s childhood home, and William visited his mother’s grave at Althorp with Catherine, Princess of Wales, a few days before their wedding.

At the unveiling of Diana’s statue in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace on 20 July 2021, William and Harry received a warm welcome from their aunts Sarah and Jane. Earl Spencer was also present at the event and embraced the two princes.

Diana sometimes had her problems with her family (who doesn’t?). She felt she couldn’t trust Jane Fellowes, as her husband was the Queen’s deputy private secretary and they lived in Kensington at the time.

Nor could Diana trust Sarah McQuorcodale or even her mother Frances Shand Kydd, because they would have told the others everything. Diana even got into difficulties with her brother, because when she divorced King Charles in 1992, she wanted to move into Garden Cottage on the Spencers’ estate. Unfortunately, Earl Spencer explained to Diana that he didn’t want to draw attention to his family and that they needed privacy, so she couldn’t leave London and move into his house.

Whether Princess Diana spoke to her brothers or not, her children tried to visit her and keep in touch. It must be very difficult for Harry to stay close to the Spencer family, as he now lives in the United States, although Sarah and Jane were present at Archie’s christening.

Perhaps it will be more difficult for Prince William to visit the Spencers, as he now also has to visit the Middleton family. I believe that William will always keep in touch with his mother’s family and will continue to visit his mother’s grave in Althrop so that this connection is kept alive for his children.

It’s good that Diana’s family made sure that she could visit William and Harry and stay close to them. William even flew from Norway to attend the funeral of his grandmother (Frances, Diana’s mother) in 2004. Harry also attended his grandmother’s funeral. This shows that there is a warm relationship despite the loss of their mother. I think the Spencers have done well to maintain a good relationship with Princess Diana’s two sons.
