Has Princess Anne ever been near her brothers’ wives?

Until recently, no. Princess Anne was not close to Diana, Princess of Wales, nor to Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. As for Sophie, Countess of Wessex, Anne became close to her after the death of her father. Upon the death of Prince Philip, both Sophie, and Anne cared for Queen Elizabeth and tried to be by her side in her recent bereavement.

Princesses Anne and Sophie continued to care for the Queen and became close friends. Before Philip’s death, Princess Anne was only close to a small circle of people, including her older brother, Prince Charles. The two have always been very close, being less than two years apart, while Andrew and Prince Edward are twelve and sixteen years younger than Charles.

Their mother came to the throne when they were not yet five years old, so they kept each other company when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip left for long months of royal travel. The two siblings comforted and supported each other when their parents were away, and this bond lasted into adulthood. They supported each other and were present at important moments in their lives.

Anne attended Prince Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales and Prince Charles attended the 1976 Toronto Olympics to watch Anne compete in the equestrian events. The two also share a love of horses and gardening: Anne has a small vegetable garden at home. Carlos is known for his gardens and his commitment to the environment. Brother and sister also make each other laugh. Even today, Charles manages to catch his little sister Anne by surprise and they laugh about it. They enjoy each other’s company very much.

A unique insight that probably contributed to their relationship was that Princess Anne understood that she would always be second only to Prince Charles. Anne said she understood that he was more important and would rule, but she did not. Instead, Anne accepted the role of helping her older brother; and the two are the hardest-working royals.

I must say that Princess Anne’s sober, down-to-earth attitude made a close friendship with the dramatic and agitated Diana impossible. Anne did not understand Diana’s taste for the press and paparazzi and did not like the constant drama Diana brought her. Besides, Anne had been the most beloved princess for years and when Princess Diana suddenly entered the family, Anne was a bit offended that she was no longer noticed and admired as she had been for years. There was a new face in the royal family and the world adored this new princess.

As for Sarah, Duchess of York, she was so flighty and unserious that Anne would never have approached her. The two were, and remain, fundamentally different. And while Sarah got along with Diana most of the time, Princess Anne was reserved and left the news to them. Newsreels often showed how Diana and Sarah would mock royal protocol and laugh at each other’s little jokes. Sarah and Diana wanted to have fun, while Anne went about her business and took care of her children.

The Princess Royal has always been very close to her two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall. The other person Anne was always close to was her father, Prince Philip. Their worldviews were very similar and their practical approach to life led them to see things in the same way. Being the Queen’s only daughter also brought about a certain closeness between mother and daughter, who work together without interruption. Anne cares for her mother as only a daughter can.

I have always admired Princess Anne and hope that others will discover that she is a royal rock star.
