Although some cases of gay and bisexual men have been recorded, anyone who has close contact with someone with monkeypox can contract the virus.
The UK’s Health Security Agency said a “significant proportion” of recent cases in the UK and Europe have been among gay and bisexual men, adding, “We therefore particularly encourage them to be alert for symptoms and seek help if this is the case”.

Outbreaks of the disease can be controlled by measures to prevent infection. Vaccination against smallpox (chickenpox) has been shown to be 85 percent effective in preventing monkeypox. The United Kingdom has purchased doses of the smallpox vaccine, but it is not clear how many vaccines can be given. Antiviral medications may also help in dealing with the disease.
