Parenting styles change over time, and Queen Elizabeth grew up at a time when the aristocracy was raised by nannies. Parents spent time with their children, but often it was only an hour a day. When Princess Isabel and Prince Filipe gave birth to Prince Charles in 1948 and Princess Anne in 1950, they continued to raise their children in the manner of the aristocracy of the time.

Prince Charles said he was “inevitably raised by the nursery staff. I think Isabel and Filipe would have had more time for their first two children if Isabel had not ascended the throne in 1952, but she had suddenly become queen and her time with Carlos and Ana was limited. Princess Ana does not seem to suffer from her childhood experiences, but she is a pragmatic person who does not readily give in to her feelings. Ana is also extroverted.
Prince Charles is a sensitive and emotional person, so his view of childhood is rather bleak. This is probably due to the pressure everyone puts on him as heir to the throne. We know that Prince Philip wanted his son to be physically and mentally strong like him, but Charles was easily irritated. Charles was shy and introverted and only saw his father and mother for breakfast and tea.

The queen was not the most affectionate mother. When she and Filipe came home after a six-month tour abroad, she did not hug her children. She greeted them with a handshake. This alienation hurt Charles greatly, as did Prince Philip’s efforts to ensure that Charles was not spoiled and masculine. He was sent to the wrong school. Eton would have been much better than his father’s tough Gordonstoun.

As a father, Prince Charles tried to be more present for his two children, but he was busy with his work and did not spend as much time with them as Diana did. Diana spent a lot of time with Princes William and Harry, while Charles indulged in trips to the countryside with his children. They all went to Balmoral and had fun together, or they went to Broadfield, Charles’ farm, where they enjoyed the gardens and fields. The children say that at school he laughed at the plays and sent them handwritten bills, but they could not decipher the handwriting to see whether it was a letter of praise or disapproval. Still, this shows that he was a father trying to be a good father.

After Diana’s death, Charles redoubled his efforts to be there for his children, but both were absent most of the year. When they were together, everyone took issue with Charles’ relationship with Camilla. Eventually, the young princes realized that their father was happier with Camilla in his life, and they gradually accepted her into their lives.
Although he was not very available as a father, Charles did his best to spend time with them, biking and skiing. After Diana’s departure, Prince Charles spent more time with his children during the school vacations. Harry was almost 13 when his mother died and has already said terrible things about his father’s upbringing. But given the many terrible things Harry has said about his family since living in the United States, it is clear that Carlos tried to help his children cope with their grief and move on.
Charles was a more active father than Prince Philip was with Charles, but by today’s standards, you can imagine how little time Prince Charles spent with his children. In the 1980s, many fathers were not as involved as they are today, and it was no different then. Add to that the fact that the aristocracy sent their children to boarding school and it seems that William and Harry should have spent more time with their father.
I find it interesting that Prince William and Catherine did not send George to boarding school this year. They both went to boarding schools after his eighth birthday but decided to spend more time with George. It seems that the royal parenting style is evolving, and I am glad that the Cambridge family has decided to spend more time together. Family is very important, even if the family is a monarchy.
