What did Prince Charles see in Camilla Parker Bowles that he did not see in Princess Diana?

Camilla is often called an adulteress, which in a sense is true. But Camilla or not, Charles and Diana’s marriage was doomed from the beginning.

Diana was not well-born, but neither was she very intellectual. She had little in common with the Prince of Wales, a stodgy, old-fashioned man. The monstrous age difference was bad enough, but their interests only widened the already wide gap between them. Only the engagement interview revealed that their relationship was awkward, stifling, and incredibly strained.

It has been said that at Cambridge Charles was almost a student of the 1930s. He steadfastly rejected the new music and long hair of the sixties, let alone the eighties. I have never believed the claim that Diana was an idiot, but she certainly did not spend her spare time reading Proust and Laurens Van der Post. Diana was a complicated person, with serious emotional problems that I don’t think Charles was prepared to deal with.

And in a way, Charles and Diana’s marriage was practically arranged. Charles was going to marry an aristocratic woman with no past – his dating list looked like 1950. He was the world’s most eligible bachelor and was under crippling pressure to marry and have an heir. Diana Spencer, 19, and the daughter of an earl seemed like a good match.

After the wedding, Diana was all that could be read or seen. Diana played to the media, loved the cameras and the cameras loved her. But when you marry the future king, you have to leave the control to him. But Diana didn’t, and the world loved her for it. She was a truly wonderful woman, but she was not what Prince Charles needed.

Camilla, on the other hand, was the exact opposite. She was open-minded, but she didn’t seek the limelight and let him call the shots. Carlo saw her as a woman of his age, which meant they could easily talk about current affairs, music, and many other topics. The chemistry between them was perfect and they were made for each other.

In the case of Charles and Diana, this was not the case.

Their marriage failed miserably and, in retrospect, it’s easy to see why it shouldn’t have happened. But if it hadn’t happened, we would never have known the joy of William and Harry, which we still admire today.
