Why Did The Marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Become a Global Phenomenon?

The world loves heroes and heroines, and the world wants a good love story. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were a love match, but they met and married at different times with very different rules. Prince Charles and Princess Diana could be the best love story of that time. People wanted to believe fairy tales still existed in royal realms, so they devoured all things Diana, and Charles languished by the wayside.

The press focused on Diana the Princess of Wales. Slim, smiling, she lavished love on the sick and the lonely. What she wore was beamed around the globe, and we liked how this young royal engaged with the real world. People liked how Diana mothered her two sons, too. Yes, Prince Charles had a fabulous garden, and he had crazy ideas on conservation (a man ahead of his time), so people watched the princess. The cracks in the marriage were showing, but people still wanted a fairy tale ending.
