Yet only one succeeded in actually breaking the mold to hold power over the Press: Prince William Indeed, for all his false public bravado, the factual reality is that the British press broke Harry; They broke him so deeply and effectively that he is not only collaborating and leaking to them willingly, but he is at the point where he depends on them to promote himself and to attack his brother and Family.
In fact, at this point, with all the personal drama Harry is happily serving up to the British press, he may be their employee of the year. Harry has not learned from his parents’ mistakes. He has become an even worse version of their mistakes.
At the time, the press took it out on Charles and Diana. In fact, it succeeded in getting the then Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, and his wife Diana to break the golden royal rule of “never complain and never explain” by having them “complain and explain” in interviews and instead talk about their private dramas. In doing so, C&D exposed the monarchy to one of the most serious crises threatening its future.
First, in 1992, Charles gave the interview with Jonathan Dimbleby, who shocked the nation when he admitted his infidelity and gave his side of the story.
Then, they got to Diana, 3 years later in 1995 with the Martin Bashir Panorama interview where she admitted to her infidelity and gave her side of the story. Finally, they got to Harry in 2020, who also sat on Oprah with his wife to tell their side of the story and throw more stones at the monarchy.

In the original family of the four from Wales, there was only one person who stood up to the press and refused to be intimidated by it: Prince William despite all the lies that H&M has concocted to accuse William of doing what they themselves have proven in court, namely instructing and colluding with the British press to undermine the monarchy, William is the ONLY person who has never given an interview or written a book to give his side of the story. He has instead made a point to uphold the “never complain and never explain” golden rule, drilled into him by his grandparents.
Both Catherine and him uphold it because they experienced it and know that, it may be the hardest path to choose in the face of nonstop slander and abuse, but it is the only effective rule in the long run Integrity of Character and dignified silence in the face of slanders, abuse, and attacks, work way better than crying victim in the press and explaining oneself in exchange for sympathy and positive PR articles.
This resilience has earned William and Catherine the affection and admiration of the general public. In fact, we see who really has the strength to carry the monarchy on their shoulders and who cannot stand the pressure. This is essentially why the press has never been able to destroy William: He does his duty by keeping them on their toes and, like the Queen, his popularity is entirely tied to the public itself and not manufactured by the press. So when GMA claimed this morning that the press had made William “untouchable”, she was talking nonsense. William is untouchable to the press because he has been the one to break it, not the other way around. He has forced them to surround him and try to interpret his every move. For the British press, William is an unknown and opaque sea.
On the surface it appears calm and peaceful; however, due to its opacity, they cannot gauge its true depth and therefore have to stay on the shore and speculate, as they are unsure of the lake: “What does it look like, how deep is it, can they navigate for sure…”.
As journalist Stephen Bates aptly described it, “To the press, Prince William is the great unknown.”
